INSIDE OUT V: Phalanx Trio and KUSH @ Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Tickets
Apr 29 @ 8:00 pm

Phalanx Trio

Phalanx Trio originated as a sub-grouping of several other band formations that all included Matt Mitchell, Kim Cass, and Kate Gentile. These bands include Mitchell’s sextet Phalanx Ambassadors; his large ensemble project A Pouting Grimace; and Snark Horse, Mitchell and Gentile’s compositionally co-led rotating cast ensemble. Cass and Mitchell also play in Gentile’s quartet.
The repertoire of Phalanx Trio includes compositions by all its members, and especially from the above ensembles. The trio setting allows for the unpacking, re-purposing and examining of compositions written for these groups.

KUSH

In his recent album of original compositions, Maine guitarist Ryan Blotnick mines a bittersweet melodic/harmonic vein balanced by an African-influenced rhythmic elan. Conceived as an antidote to the more aggressive forms of New York jazz, KUSH offers freshly-minted waltzes, haunting ballads and more than a touch of Frisellian Americana, as well as a variety of grooves combining jazz and African feels. New York saxophonist Michael Blake, a longtime Blotnick mentor and collaborator, is the perfect foil, contributing his own blend of lyricism, heat, and harmonic depth. Also integral to the record’s success is the buoyant yet laid-back rhythm team of Scott Colberg on bass and RJ Miller on drums. Tonight’s concert features an all-Maine rhythm section with Ross Gallagher on bass, playing a mixture of new material and songs from KUSH.

Set I – Phalanx Trio

Matt Mitchell – piano
Kim Cass – bass
Kate Gentile – drums

Set II – Ryan Blotnick’s KUSH

Ryan Blotnick – guitar
Michael Blake – saxophones
Ross Gallagher – bass
RJ Miller – drums

SlamJunk Presents: Shadow Monster (Solo set - Brooklyn-based Songwriter) @ Freddy's Backroom

Gillian Visco is the brooklyn based songwriter behind the dark and nostalgic sound that is Shadow Monster. Using heavy imagery and lyrics to describe her conflict with social influence, the pains of growing up, and the consequences of love– Gillian is constantly debating the devil on her shoulder. Her voice calls to mind singers like Jenny Lewis, Elliott Smith, and Bright Eyes.
